"Squad 14"

"Squad 14" is a Saulsbury/Spartan Heavy Duty Rescue Squad, placed in service in May 2000. The unit is powered by a 430 HP, series 60 Detroit Diesel with an Allison 6040, 5 speed automatic transmission. Seating for eight in the enclosed cab is provided for the members' safety. An extensive radio system includes 800 Mhz, UHF, VHF, CB, Cellular phone and a Laptop computer.

The electrical power plant is a Marathon 48 KW split shaft PTO driven generator. In addition to eight 1500-watt quartz lights recessed in the upper body of the Squad, a 9000-watt Supervac Light Tower is on the vehicle. Several portable light bars and tri-pods are available to assist with lighting needs.

"Squad 14" is equipped to handle ANY type of entrapment or technical rescue. The Squad carries Rope Rescue gear, MCI Equipment, and a large complement of hand and portable power tools. Battery operated reciprocating saws and drills and standard electric power tools are available. The Squad is State certified ALS non-transport.

A two-bottle 6000-lb. ASME air system with two 200-foot high pressure reels is in place to operate numerous air tools. A nine bag Hurst high-pressure air bag system and a two-bag 25 ton 43" lift Vetta Medium Pressure system are on the Squad.

Stabilization equipment includes: front and rear 6 ton winches, a 2 1/2 ton portable winch that attaches to the Squad's side anchor points, two floor jacks, chains and cables Lug-Alls and four Z-Mag ground pads and two Z-Mag "A" frames for tensioned buttress needs. Squad 14 has four electric Hurst power units with 100ft. reels to operate ten hydraulic tools. In addition a gas power unit is mounted on its own handcart for portable use.

The Squad is planned with extra compartment space for any new tools that may be placed in service over the next 20 years "Squad 14" members meet several requirements in order to become a part of the elite team that staffs this truck.

All members must be a member in good standing with the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad.  All members must be at least an EMT-B.  Additional requirement are:  Hazmat Awareness, SCBA training, Vehicle Extrication, Rope Rescue, Mass Casualty Incident Management-Two and training in response to Weapons of Mass Destruction.
