August 31st, 2003 ~ ROCK AND ROLL HALF MARATHON DRAWS 17,500 RUNNERS Under very humid and warm conditions 17,500 runners competed in the 2003 Rock and Roll Half Marathon held on Sunday August 31st along with the Virginia Beach Ocean Front. EMS Volunteers from nearly every rescue squad in Virginia Beach assisted Rescue 14 with manpower and or ambulances during the early morning marathon. 11 ALS ambulances [including 1 navy ambulance from NAS Oceana], 3 ATV’s, 3 Bike Teams, 9 medical stations and one EMS Command Post were staffed by EMS volunteers along with 12 volunteer doctors, and a large number of EVMS Students. A total of 208 medical volunteers overall. It is estimated that as many as 400 runners were treated in the medical tents with a total of 18 runners requiring transportation to several local hospitals.
